Due to the separation of Madagascar from Africa about 150 million years ago, the island began to evolve its own nature. As a result it is now home of 5% of the world's plant and animal species; 80% of which are endemic to Madagascar. The Canal des Pangalanes with its rich flora is also known as the Malagasy Everglades.

Plants & Trees
The widespread palm Ravinala and the endemic Madagascar Pitcher Plant can be found along Canal des Pangalanes.

Birds
Madagascar holds world record of endemicity when it comes to birds. The waters of the canal and forest are home to king fishers, drongos, coucals and many more exotic species.
